Jan Gerhardus Birkenbach was born on 28 July 1878, in Potchefstroom, Transvaal, South Africa, his father, Carl Birkenbach, was 47 and his mother, Maria Elizabeth Koster, was 37. He married Martha Magdalena Weeks on 26 July 1910, in Potchefstroom, Transvaal, South Africa. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 2 daughters. He registered for military service in 1900. He died on 7 November 1937, in Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa, at the age of 59, and was buried in Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa.
