Sergant Bernard Lonngren Birkenbach was born on 1 May 1917, in Potchefstroom, Transvaal, South Africa, his father, Carl Sebastian Birkenbach, was 36 and his mother, Emily Adolphina Lonngren, was 29. He married Elizabeth Grace Clegg on 31 March 1946, in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa. He died on 26 July 1989, in Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa, at the age of 72.

Bernard Lonngren Birkenbach , his father, Carl Sebastian, was the brother of Jan Gerhardus Birkenback that married Martha Madalena Weeks .
