He married Maria Elizabeth Koster on 27 September 1869, in Potchefstroom, Transvaal, South Africa. They were the parents of at least 3 sons and 2 daughters. He immigrated to Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, United Kingdom in 1856. He registered for military service in 1855. In 1877, at the age of 46, his occupation is listed as business partner in weyse and birkenbach, house, sign and coach painters in Potchefstroom, Transvaal, South Africa.
