Vietnam War – Victor Russell Goin (USA)

Published in The Medford Mail Tribune, 04/17/2016: Vic Goin, 73, passed away February 16, 2016 at 1:37 a.m. at the Yuma Regional Medical Center after complications from a ruptured aortic aneurysm. Vic and his wife, Dorene Jeanette Leach Goin, resided in Shady Cove, Ore. They were vacationing for the winter in Yuma, Ariz. at the time of Vic's passing. Vic was born November 10, 1942 to Francis Lehman Goin and Viola Beatrice Smith Goin in Southgate, Calif. They preceded him in death. Vic and his younger sister, Janice, moved with their parents to Oakridge, Ore. where he spent his childhood. When he was 16, his family moved back to Palo Alto, Calif, where he graduated from Cumberland High School before moving back to Oregon on his own to work for the Forest Service. He attended SOC and OIT in southern Oregon. Vic was in the Armed Forces and served during the Vietnam and Korean Wars and was always been proud to be a veteran. In 1974, Vic met and fell in love with Dorene Leach and her daughter, Crystal. (Vic said later in life that he wasn't sure which one he loved first.) Vic and Dorene were married January 31, 1975, at Ruch Community Bible Church near Jacksonville, Ore. Shortly after Vic adopted Crystal, they had two more children, Elizabeth and Timothy. Vic and his family were active members of Ruch Community Bible church for 25 years. Vic served on the Deacon board, drove the church bus, and played on the Ruch Softball Team. He worked as a service manager at Lithia Motors and Southern Oregon Subaru, and retired from the automobile industry in 1996. In 2002, after their children were grown, Victor and Dorene moved to Shady Cove, Ore. and began attending Trail Christian Fellowship. Vic bought a 1972 Chevy Nova and spent many relaxing hours restoring it from the ground up. For the past 25 years Vic was an avid researcher on the Goin family history and came to love the pastime of genealogy. He would spend hours connecting with distant relatives and scouring the internet for information on his 'roots.' Dorene and Vic also traveled to ancestor grave sites throughout the United States, and attended the Goin Reunion yearly in Albany, Ore. where they grew to know and love the extended family. Other hobbies Vic enjoyed were hunting, fishing, and camping, as he was a 'cowboy at heart,' and in his later years dancing with his wife. Vic and Dorene celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary with friends in Yuma, Ariz. They shared their last dance two weeks before his passing. Vic is survived by his beloved wife, Dorene; his children, Crystal Ripplinger, Elizabeth Nelson, and Timothy Goin; his 10 grandchildren, Bryson, Matthew, Daizy, Elijah, Ava, Lily, Julianne, Riggs, Jenna, and Barrett; his half-brother, Larry Goin (Ginny) of Westport, Wash.; his sister, Janice Whiteley (Slim) of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho; and his niece and nephews, Vickie, Ray, Steven, and Thomas.
