20Aug SWA Border War- Louis Kotze Meerholz (Africa) by douggieweeks SWA Border War Louis Kotze Meerholz 1958-1979 Louis Kotze Meerholz, youngest son of John Douglas and Sylvia Brenda (Evens) Meerholz, was engaged to Renee and planning their wedding date.` Louis Kotze Meerholz, youngest son of John Douglas and Sylvia Brenda (Evens) Meerholz, was engage to Renee at the time and planning their wedding later in the year.`` The story told to me and what I have heard, being a young boy at the time that loved my uncle so much and couldn't believe he's not coming back and searching for answers : ` The story continue that Louis was due to return in December/ January 1978, and swap out (stand in) for a friend that was due to return home later. Apparently his friend wife was pregnant and due soon, and giving his his friend the opportunity to be home with the wife. ` During the previous night of 15 January 1979, the Owambo SWA (Namibia) base camp was attacked and bombarded. The next day the clean up operation started and Louis picked up the Russian mortar shell, and maybe was not familiar with the danger picking up a mortar shell that havent detonated .The shell is extremely unstable and can explode at any time. ` He posed for a photo holding the mortar shell with his hand on top touch the shell sensitive area. Apparently two seniors walked passed at the time ....... He turned around and the head of the mortar shell shifted and detonated, sadly killed Louis instantly and critically injured some of his close friends in close vicinity. Go Back Go Back
