Jan Birkenbach was a member of the Western Transvaal Command of the Boer forces during the Anglo Boer war from 1899 till 1902.

He married Martha Magdalena Weeks on 26 July 1910, in Potchefstroom, Transvaal, South Africa. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 2 daughters. He registered for military service in 1900. He died on 7 November 1937, in Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa, at the age of 59, and was buried in Pretoria, Transvaal, South Africa.

He died on 24 October 1906, in Potchefstroom, Transvaal, South Africa,
